Camps
1991 – 2024: 33 years of history!
Among all the activities carried out, the Summer Camps occupy a main place, an ideal setting for the achievement of the pedagogical and leisure objectives it pursues.
The methodology used fundamentally uses the word, the game and imagination as essential tools to combine, in globalized programs, different subjects that at all times try to make fun and learning compatible.

Each Nhorte Camp is the result of the collaboration of different groups of people throughout the year.
TEACHERS: This is what we call the founders and promoters of the entire Nhorte project. Free Time Directors, all of them, meet monthly, plan and evaluate each and every one of our activities.
NHORTES: What better name for monitors of our camps. Practically all of them have been first campers, and also with qualifications in our LAMA Leisure Time Training School. Their dedication and good work, witnessed by hundreds of participants each year, are also our seal of quality.
Surely, these names will be remembered forever with great affection: Guille, Laura, Marina, Nerea, Esther, Samu, Edu, Andrea, Miriam, Clara, Elena, Tito, Jorge, Claudia, Quique, Andreína, Alex, Ángel, Manuela, Zapa, Daniel, Mario, Jaime, Henar, Héctor, Sara, Marta, Oliver, César, Natalia, Truji, Irene, Varo, Ana, Inés, Teo, Daniel, Lucía, María, Minerva, Carlos, Andreíta, Candela, Luna, Rosa, Eva, Ceci, Elisa, Ricardo, Juan, Sofo, Lucía, Mara, Jose, Óscar, Gonza, Cami, Violeta, Silvio, Nilo, Hugo, Raquel, Rubén, Zape, Iker.
FACTORS: These are specific collaborations of friends, or specialists, who decide to contribute their knowledge and skills to a camp or a specific activity.
CAMP SERVICES: No one is alien to the camp dynamics and every role is, therefore, at the service of the activity, but some tasks require special technical knowledge, such as :
–Kitchen: Quartermaster, Cook and Kitchen Helpers, they are specialists in the tastes and needs that each shift demands, and they manage to provide us and cook for the entire varied and tasty camp.
– Gallery: In it we treat our small discomforts or minor injuries, and we will listen to the reasons why we may feel bad at some point. In addition, specific medical assistance is provided to us at the Venta las Ranas Health Centers (4 km away), Villaviciosa (8 km away) or at the Cabueñes General Hospital, near Gijón (12 km away). of the field).
–Machinery Manager: is the person in charge of ensuring that the installation works and is clean, ready for use. It also teaches us the correct use of field material.
–Secretary: Manages the bureaucracy of the camp and the telephone, for which it has a schedule that is convenient to respect. (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)
PARTICIPANTS / Age Groups
But without a doubt, the main role of the camp is boys and girls. At the camp, our participants are divided into the following age groups:
CHISPASThey are 5 to 8 years old and sleep in the bunk beds of our residential pavilion (“Las Cabañas”). Of this group, those who are 5 and 6 years old are PULGUIS and deserve special attention from their Nhortes, given the difficulties that their younger age imposes on them in some daily tasks. (Only 7 and 8 year olds come to the 4th Shift, which lasts 14 days).
KITES They are between 9 and 12 years old and, of these, those who are 9 and 10 years old can generally choose between sleeping in a tent or in a cabin, depending on the number of participants.
ZULUSThey are adolescents between 13 and 15 years old. They sleep in tents.
ECOS They are the oldest group in our camps and are between 16 and 18 years old. With specific exceptions, they have their own camping site.
READ THIS CAREFULLY:
All of these groups are not closed, so depending on specific circumstances – seniority and/or proximity to another age group – you can go from one to another regardless of age. But it is important that this is decided at the time of signing up, before starting each camp, for which you must consult us about any changes you want to make, we will guide you to make the best decision. Once in camp YOU CAN NO LONGER CHANGE your age group (District).
It is specially equipped for carrying out camps and leisure and free time activities.
It has different camping areas, a pavilion of rooms with bunk beds for the little ones (the Cabins), play areas, services and
showers, more than 30 different species of trees, dining room and kitchen, swimming pool, sports courts and zip line. A space, in short, that completes the idea of installation that we were pursuing when we started walking, and to which
Every year different structural improvements are added. You can get a better idea by looking at the photos we show in the FACILITIES tab of the main menu or by clicking here
The surroundings allow us to walk along forest paths, watch the sunset by the sea, bathe in different beaches and get to know typical Asturian towns with their farms, granaries and orchards.
HOW TO GET THERE BY YOUR OWN MEANS
The Nhorte Camp is located in Argüero (Municipality of Villaviciosa), in the Km. 4 of the road that goes from VENTA LAS RANAS to VILLAVICIOSA/ARGÜERO/TAZONES (if you come from Gijón on the A-8 highway, until the San Miguel de Arroes exit). On the contrary, if you come from Santander/Villaviciosa, once you arrive at EL PIDAL, you must continue in the direction of Gijón, without taking any more detour (not even that of “Argüero”, a very common mistake). You will immediately recognize the
property on which the Camp is located due to its white wall, with the red triangle of Nhorte presiding over the entrance, in the same direction you are going.

– The number of places is limited, and we will admit passengers until the places are full, at which time we will open a waiting list for those who could no longer enter.
– When you have finished completing the Registration Form on our website MAKE SURE, before validating, that you have chosen the correct option in the Trips , this way we will avoid last minute surprises.
– Once paid, in the event of suspension of the trip, the amount of the ticket will not be refunded.
– If you choose some of these trips, the amount will be added to the fee and that total will be the one that appears at the end of the registration process.
It is advisable to bring a sandwich and water so that the Incorporation trip does not feel so long.
– Remember that, to avoid unnecessary waits, we will try to observe absolute punctuality, although sometimes, depending on factors that escape us (such as traffic or any unforeseen event), you have to wait a little at one of the departure points. In any case, if you call the campa, we will keep you promptly informed of any unforeseen events.
The backpack should be packed by the camper or in their presence: it is useless to mark the clothing (highly recommended) if later they don’t know which brand they have and where it is. It is a good method to have everything that will be taken in front of you and then pack things, starting with the heaviest, in the backpack:
- Backpack (essential, except for Chispas, the small one from “school” is not enough) sleeping bag and blanket (depends on the sleeping bag).
- Insulation or “mat”.
- Sport shoes, for rain and hiking.
- Warm clothing (like a jacket).
- Plate and breakfast tank like camping (not glass), cutlery and napkin.
- T-shirts and shorts in sufficient quantity.
- Tracksuit, sweater or hoodie.
- Raincoat, poncho or waterproof cape (Essential for Asturias!).
- Swimsuit and towel.
- Sufficient number of socks.
- Toiletries.
- Sunscreen cream.
- Cap.
- Pencil case with pencils, pen, and notebook.
- Optional to bring a costume.
Upon arriving at the camp, if you are coming for the first time, we will give you a bag to store the plate and cutlery. Use it, it will help you not to lose them and to keep them clean. If you were here last year, you already have it, but if not, you can also get it when you arrive. Upon leaving, we will give you a t-shirt so you have a memory of your stay with us.
ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTATION
- ID card if you have one.
- Medical card or Social Security card and passport-sized photo.
VERY IMPORTANT
Pulguis and Chispas (5 to 8 years old) consume more clothing (especially underwear) than older children. It is advisable for them to bring a sufficient amount.
The raincoat and the rain shoes are essential, they allow you to participate in the activity normally if the typical orbayu of Asturias falls.
Activities and pedagogical objectives
Before signing up it is worth knowing
International camps
Summary (print edition)
After two complicated years due to the pandemic and when it seems that normality has already settled into our lives, we want next summer to be, once again, an opportunity to have fun with friends, to enjoy time together, in person and live. That is why we invite you to catch up on games, races and gymkhanas, costumes, dances and dips, always in the company of those Sparks, Comets, Zulus, Echoes and Nhortes that you will not forget, because you laughed with them, you sang and dreamed.
2024: The Enchanted Forest
They say that the gnome, the elf, the elf or the Trasgu do not like to be seen. Also that at night the forest trees talk to each other, but since they do it when there are no humans present, it is not known what their voice sounds like. You would have to ask the water of the stream to know if all this is true, or better yet the wind, which knows everything because it blows in every corner. How about? You sign up?
“The Enchanted Forest” is our proposal to approach a world full of fantastic beings, a source of life and stimulation of the imagination. Knowing and pampering it puts us on the path of inhabitants of a planet that needs our love more than our help and enjoy it more than ignore it.
-And the beach? -Yes of course.
-And the pool? -Of course, daily.
-And will the Zulus and Echoes bivouac return? -It couldn’t be missed.
-And the multi-adventure activities, the zip line, the nights by the fire and the festival (I’ll bring something nice for that night!)?
-Everything again in the countryside, a true enchanted forest.
LIFE IN THE CAMPA
In 32 years we have had time to verify that there are things that are only learned in a camp, away from home, having to fend for yourself, and that it is noticeable when a girl or a boy has that ease to get along, having won the game against the excess of caution. These are things that last a lifetime. We have also seen boys and girls who have learned for themselves how important it is to take care of nature, make friends or collaborate in the proper functioning of a society, even if it is small and peculiar, because here we are all important.
For those of you who have never come to a Nhorte Camp, here we leave you some clues of the things you will find.
✔️ Lamapoly: after breakfast this game takes place with which campers put their things in order in the tent or cabin, which will be visited and reviewed every day by the Nhortes, in the middle of fun tests.
✔️ Bath Time: at the end of the morning, and sometimes in the middle of the afternoon, everyone has time for a bath in the swimming pool of the camp with its Nhortes, or to take a shower and sunbathe.
✔️ Napping: is the rest time that follows eating and during which we can call on the phone, have a soft drink at the stall, read, take a nap or simply rest.
✔️ Ateneo: with the fall of the afternoon this assembly takes place with all the Groups or Districts that are in the facility. At the Ateneo we all have the right to speak and be heard regardless of our age or the apparent interest in what we want to express: the only requirement is to show respect with the words of others. It is one of the times of the day when the magic of the Nhorte is most noticeable.
✔️ Overnight or Bivouac: it is the most successful activity among the elderly every year. In it, Zulus and Echos leave the facility with their groups to explore the surroundings and sleep between one and three nights in different places. For the little ones (Kites and Sparks), this activity is more suited to their age, it is normal that their overnight stay outdoors takes place within the facility, for one night only. We like to continue remembering that the spirit of camaraderie that is experienced in each group upon return makes the camp no longer the same.
✔️ Star activity: each year, we will visit some place of special interest in the nearest environment, such as the San Feliz Recreational Area, the spectacular Botanical Garden, San Lorenzo Beach with the Surf School, or the fun “paddle surf” tours, both in Gijón; but depending on the time, we can also go further, such as to Cangas Aventura, a wonderful natural area in Arriondas with the most attractive Outdoor activities, or to the Asturian Jurassic Museum, in Colunga.
✔️ Campfire: It’s an exciting and fun moment that the large group celebrates at the beginning and end of each session. It’s another moment when magic is seen like never before as the flames dance in the night…
✔️ Sports: in organized competitions or more spontaneously, sports (basketball, volleyball, handball, soccer) are always present in our magnificent sports courts, we can also do archery, Olympics… or invent new ones, like the CANVAS DESCENT!
✔️ Outdoor Activities: canoeing in the estuary, canyon descent, hiking, orienteering, introduction to climbing… and the longest zip line in Asturias!
✔️ Festivities: nighttime activities where campers show off their best outfits and dance always less than they would like; sometimes ending the party and getting people to sleep becomes a difficult task.
✔️ Internal Mail: facilitates written communication between campers during the same camp. Magical confidences in the shade of an apple tree… Every day, in the Ateneo, one or two volunteers are appointed as mail carriers.
✔️ Beach Day: by bus or on foot, we can go swimming in beaches that are authentic natural paradises: Rodiles, la Griega, Merón, España, la Ñora, etc.
CAMP ANIMATION COURSE (4th Session, August 1st to 14th)
✔️ 4th Session Course: Echoes, ages 16 and 18.
What is the Camp Animation Course?
It’s an introductory course for those Echoes who wish to become Leisure Time Monitors in the future. The dynamics of the activity are fundamentally practical, although some theoretical talks are also given on initiation in very general topics such as Activity Planning, Outdoor Philosophy, Health Education, and similar. Learning to work in a group, putting creative ideas into practice, or being an example for the younger ones are the pillars of the course itself. Sports and nature activities are another great attraction of this event in which participants have the opportunity to descend the Sella River in a canoe, get on a surfboard, or perhaps plan other alternatives, since the level of decision-making and independence granted to this group is higher than that of the rest of the camp, a way of recognizing their imminent adult status. Some of the participants in these courses do so with the idea of becoming Nhortes in our camps, for others it is more an opportunity to enjoy a good activity in the company of an excellent group of friends. We hope that, in any case, for everyone, it will be an opportunity to acquire new knowledge in a FUN way.
PEDAGOGICAL OBJECTIVES. Why we do it
There are common objectives to all Nhorte Camps, regardless of the theme of the year, which pay special attention to the moment of development of each participant, life in Nature, companionship, and learning to manage independently. All of them will be present in our activities:
✔️ Promote harmonious emotional and cognitive development.
✔️ Stimulate integration and participation in groups.
✔️ Learn to live in nature, respecting it.
✔️ Improve ways and forms of communication with others, activating the maximum number of ways to express oneself.
✔️ Develop observation and immediate memory capacity.
✔️ Learn to listen, respect the turn to speak.
✔️ Contribute and cooperate in collective tasks.
✔️ Participate in group decision-making and accept and fulfill agreements.
✔️ Maintain order, cleanliness, and personal hygiene.
✔️ Maintain an optimal and polite attitude at the table.
✔️ Improve attention and concentration.
✔️ Speak in public, addressing the entire camp, at least once.
✔️ Initiate in the basic aspects of Outdoor Activities.
✔️ Make new friends.
✔️ Exercise criticism and free opinion.
✔️ Enjoy, have fun, laugh, dream…
The specification of these objectives drives the activity plans that the Nhortes (monitors) of the camps prepare in different previous meetings, such as the Camp Meetings, the first and awaited appointment, every spring, in our Asturian facility.
EVALUATION / What is achieved
Our camps have different ways of evaluating the activity at each precise moment, as follows:
✔️ In our beloved “Camp Meetings”, a few months before the camps begin, the Nhortes gather to contribute their experience and ideas to the camp programs for that year, and to evaluate the result of the previous campaign.
✔️ During the Camp, the result of the activity is evaluated daily and the general state of the camp, by Districts (age groups) or with each complete team of Nhortes. It’s time to make corrections based on the always different characteristics of each group.
✔️ During the last days of each session, the Nhortes complete a personalized report for each camper evaluating various aspects of their behavior throughout those days (Personal Order, Hygiene, Sociability, etc.). This report is sent to each home after the activity.
✔️ On the penultimate day of each session, participants complete an anonymous survey in which they can rate the different camp services and their Nhortes. This survey allows us to gauge the satisfaction level of each camper after their stay at our Camp, while guiding us on the corrections to make in the future.
✔️ The entire team of Nhortes, (with the Camp Management) at the forefront, conducts a general evaluation of the camp on the last night of each session.
✔️ Finally, the Nhorte Teacher Team (the founding members) meets in October to evaluate all aspects of the campaign. Through subsequent meetings throughout the year, this team undertakes new ideas for the following year.
Before Signing Up IT IS ADVISABLE TO KNOW
Registration for any of our camps implies acceptance of all the rules described below, so we ask you to read them carefully and consult with us any doubts you may have.
PHONE USE
Nhorte provides each age group with a mobile phone, after lunch (15:30) and except for days of special activities outside the camp, from which they can call their homes. They are the ones who call, as the office phone or the Director’s phone are for the proper administration of the camp and for emergencies, the only cases in which they will be answered outside office hours (10 am to 2 pm). Still, we like to remind parents and relatives to be patient and not to get nervous about some calls – especially in the first few days – that do not always happen with laughter. It is in those moments (which the Nhortes affectionately call “mamitis”) when they need your support and serenity the most, and if you deem it appropriate, the monitors or the activity director will speak with you.
For all these reasons, and for educational and operational reasons – for obvious reasons its use during activities is not allowed-, we recommend that campers do not bring their own mobile phones, as Nhorte cannot be responsible for charging their batteries or possible loss. For the sake of the children, we hope for your solidarity in this matter as well. If, despite what has been said, you decide to bring it, Nhorte opens a Mobile Phone Bank by groups so that they can only use it during the aforementioned calling hours.
MEALS
The complexity of a camp requires a great effort for the kitchen staff to provide rich and varied meals, that is why, in general, we cannot accommodate special diets, although we will study each case individually if you call us and provide us, before formalizing the registration, with the necessary information to assess the situation.
VISITS
We are very pleased to welcome parents, mothers, and friends of the participants on the INCORPORATION and DEPARTURE days of the camp. Outside of these, visits are NOT ALLOWED; they demand all our attention.
CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
The Nhorte Management must be informed (through any of the phones provided on our website) of any health issues that may affect the rest of the Camp. But, in general, in cases of potential contagion (coronavirus, flu, parasites, etc.) it does not seem appropriate to sign up for the Camp, it is better to wait for another occasion. We trust in your wisdom and solidarity in this matter.
FUNCTIONAL PATHOLOGIES
Similarly, any type of functional pathology must be communicated in advance. The Nhorte Management will evaluate each case and will immediately inform you if the Camp is prepared to adequately address each specific contingency. Let’s avoid misunderstandings or a possible unnecessary bad experience by using proper prior communication.
REGISTRATION SUSPENSION
When, after payment of the Registration fee, the spot is canceled, Nhorte will retain 10% of the amount paid if the suspension occurs up to fifteen days before the start of the activity, and the total fee if it occurs within less than fifteen days before the start of the activity; in this latter case, only exceptions motivated by serious causes will be considered, for which it will be necessary to provide authorized justification (medical certificate if it is for medical reasons, or similar).
To facilitate your plans, we remind you that for those participants who opt for the INSTALLMENT PAYMENT option, no amount will be retained in case of suspension of the spot, and the amount paid up to that moment will be returned IN FULL.
TRAVEL BY BUS
If you choose to travel on one of our buses, you must reserve and pay for it when you have firmly decided, as the website will offer you this possibility until all seats are filled, after which this option will be blocked. For those who may be left without a seat, we will open a waiting list and will immediately notify you as soon as new seats become available. Once the ticket is reserved and paid for, in case of suspension, the amount will not be refunded.
Before registration, institutions wishing to reserve a spot must contact the Nhorte Management, which will evaluate each case for participation.
TURN CHANGE
If you have already signed up but, for any reason, want to change your session, no problem, just let us know with sufficient notice, and we will make the change, provided there are available spots in the new session, of course.
OTHER MATTERS OF INTEREST
BACKPACK. (Not the school one, a camping one, there are sizes) is essential at a camp; surely, you will also find it very useful outside of here because we hope this Camp will infect you with a passion for the outdoors and camping in general.
RAIN JACKET OR SIMILAR and APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR. Essential to continue activities when there is light rain, here called “orbayu.”
CARE OF COMMON MATERIAL AND BEHAVIOR. We want you to feel at home here, so we expect you to take care of things like you would at home. We must warn that intentional damage to belongings or camp facilities, as well as undesirable behavior, are serious offenses that would require us to contact parents/guardians, and if deemed necessary by the activity director, to send you home early from any of our camps, at a cost that those who registered you would have to bear. Have fun and BRING OUT THE BEST IN YOURSELF!
LUGGAGE. For your convenience, we strongly recommend saving space in your luggage and avoiding anything that is not really necessary for camp; likewise, Nhorte is not responsible for any prohibited contents (alcoholic beverages, potentially dangerous items, perishable foods, etc.).
SLEEPING. One of the most frequently asked questions is about where we sleep. Well, at camp, naturally, in tents, yes, equipped with PVC flooring, thick insulation, and a mattress. For the younger ones, we have cabins with bunk beds, where, for their age, they are better organized with their belongings.
OUR WEBSITE. We advise you to occasionally, and especially in the days before your Camp Session begins, take a look at our website (www.nhorte.com), as it is a very useful tool to receive last-minute changes or news that may interest you. We also provide our space on Facebook, X and Instagram (Campamento Nhorte), where, besides keeping you informed of our camp adventures and showing you photos of it almost daily, you can participate by leaving your comments.
NHORTE IN EUROPE
Since its foundation in 1991, Nhorte has opted for meetings with young people from other European countries and today we like to think that by promoting the mobility of boys and girls we have contributed a little to raising awareness of the idea of European citizenship.
The number one objective has always been to expand the participants’ borders, physical and cultural, in order to learn to enjoy everything that the old continent offers, not only as tourists but as neighbors and friends.
Of course, international camps are a great opportunity to practice English and the other languages that have been studied, but there are also many other valuable lessons, such as that when you go outside it is advisable to observe a lot, let yourself go a little and not judge everything. according to one’s own customs if one wants to become a man or woman of the world.
Based in Freiburg, the green gate of the German Black Forest, the members of the association Förderkreis Ferienzentren and. V., have been our traveling companions all these years.
Of all the ideas that unite us, we can highlight the need to create environments where activity and fun make it possible for young people from very distant places to meet.
In this climate of trust, far from fears and prejudices, the beginning of a long friendship will emerge.
ARE YOU “MULTICULTI”?
Next summer’s Schmitzingen camp will take place between July 28, when we will leave by bus from Spain, and August 12, the day of our return.
The number of Spanish participants is 25 and once again we have offered a good part of the places (20 this time), to young people from the Junta de Castilla y León. For this reason, if you live in that community, you may have the opportunity to sign up for the Board’s Youth service, in addition to Nhorte.
This year it is very likely that in addition to the German group, a group of boys and girls from Greece will participate in the camp, so if you are between 15 and 17 years old, this summer you can be more international than ever. The program cannot miss pool days, hiking through the Black Forest, a bus visit to a big city like Constanta and multi-adventure activities, in addition to a complete list of entertainment activities that will allow us to learn to get along naturally in a multicultural environment.
If you are ready, you can ask us for extensive and more detailed information about the trip and the activities we will do there.
